Title: COVERAGE OF JOURNAL ARTICLES BY SELECTED U.S. DISCIPLINARY SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY ABSTRACTING AND INDEXING SERVICES AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO OTHER CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL LITERATURE, PARTICULARLY CITATIONS

Abstract: A major concern of users of scientific and technical information is to obtain relevant information from a large and diffuse body of published and unpublished sources. One of the primary tools to identify references to documents containing relevant literature is the abstracting and indexing service, but little is known about this tool. This study examined abstracting and indexing services and their relationship to the use of the literature as measured by citations. A sample of 1400 1973 journal articles from six major U.S. discipline-based abstracting and indexing services in science and technology and from the citation index of the Science Citation Index, 200 from each of the seven services, was drawn. Characteristics of these articles and the journals from which they are selected are examined and the total sample is analyzed, using crosstabulations and frequency distributions. The findings of the study relate to characteristics of the literature, coverage by the abstracting and indexing services, and citations to the literature. The data indicate that most of the articles covered are in English, with the largest portion from U.S. journals which published fewer than 350 articles in 1973. Most of the articles had only one author and were not cited. There were considerable differences among the services in terms of language of the articles covered, size, country, impact factors of the journals covered, and citations and multiple coverage of the literature. A definite relationship between multiple coverage by secondary services and citations to the literature was identified. Several suggestions for follow-up studies are discussed.
