Title: Modern racism in academic librarianship towards Black Americans: A California study
Abstract: In the climate of today's modern racism, racism is often covert, subtle and seemingly intangible; on the other hand clusters of white supremacy groups openly engage in overt racist hate crimes. Although racism can be directed at any racial group(s), this study focuses on racism towards Black Americans.
This study examined (1) racial attitude and racialistic awareness, (2) the relationship between racial consciousness and awareness of racialism and (3) factors that may be associated with racial tolerance and sensitivity. It used a three-part questionnaire of racial attitude and racialistic awareness consisting of (1) demographic data of level of responsibility, years of experience, age, gender and race/ethnic group; (2) questions to measure racial attitude by level of racial consciousness or sensitivity to racial barriers from the Racial Attitude and Consciousness Exam and (3) a series of statements to determine racialistic awareness or sensitivity to incidents indicating racialism from the Racialistic Incidents Inventory. Respondents were 250 academic librarians in California.
Results show (1) no overall correlation existed between racialistic awareness and racial attitude; (2) racialistic awareness was generally low; (3) racial attitude was generally positive and (4) where relationships may exist between the two they appear to differ among subgroups. Questionnaire scores were transformed and expressed as Torrence T scores and Pearson's correlations were conducted. The Test for Parallelism was used to analyze the data. Means and standard deviations were computed and an ANOVA of mean scores was conducted.
First, this study confirms racialistic awareness and racial attitude are relatively independent; second, results show a low awareness of racialism; third, racialistic awareness alone and racial attitude alone were not shown to be affected by factors of level of responsibility, years of experience, age or gender for the most part; fourth, age may influence an association between racialistic awareness and racial attitude where there is a relationship; and fifth, gender may affect racialistic awareness.
Further research is discussed in racial attitude and racialistic awareness, value systems and needs motivated behavior, human relations training, racism and racial identity, identifying racism, the influence of racism on professional issues, the "colorblind" perspective, public policy(ies), perceptions of prejudice and empowerment strategies.
