Title: Cataloging nineteenth century American textbooks: The problem of determining editions vs printings

Abstract: An examination of the utilization of AACR2 and Library of Congress Rule Interpretations in the cataloging of the Nietz Textbook Collection on OCLC between 1985 and 1987 at the University of Pittsburgh was made. Primarily a collection of nineteenth century American textbooks, the Nietz Collection offered a unique opportunity to document the publishing and printing history of various authors and their works and the problems related to providing appropriate bibliographic access in an online environment. During the course of the investigation, five representative authors and their publishing agencies were identified and researched. The cataloging of the works of these authors was examined in light of historical evidence and current rule interpretations. Questions relating to cataloging rules and subsequent interpretations, and of providing access to materials, centered on the problem of defining editions and printings. These works were analyzed to determine the validity of these questions.
