Title: The cost of multitype library cooperation among libraries in Illinois, New York, and Pennsylvania
Abstract: This study examines factors that contribute to the expense of participating in a library cooperative. It identifies monetary and non-monetary costs and assigns dollar values to elements in both categories. It further explores the relationship between the level of contributory support provided to a library cooperative and factors such as collection size, library budget, and library location. It looks at level of support in relation to the perceived performance of the cooperative in selected program areas. Finally, it sets forth a formula for determining the costs of participation in a library cooperative. The formula is also offered as a planning tool to aid in decision making as librarians consider whether or not to participate in library cooperatives.
Based on a mailed questionnaire, this study examines the monetary and non-monetary contributions that participating libraries make toward the financial support of a library cooperative. It addresses the following research questions: (1) What types of support do individual libraries provide to the libraries cooperatives in which they participate? (2) What is the relationship between the level of support provided to library cooperatives by a member library and the size of the overall operating budget of the library? (3) What is the relationship between the levels and types of support provided to a cooperative and the number and relative importance of the programs and services provided by the cooperative? (4) What is the relationship between a library's location and the types and amounts of support that it makes to the cooperatives in which it participates? (5) What is the relationship between the size of a library's collection and the amount of support that it gives to the library cooperatives in which it participates?
This study divided libraries' support to cooperatives into two categories: goods and services and staff time. The results indicate that contributed goods and services include items such as dues, audio visual support, meeting rooms, office space, photocopying, and telephone. Staff time is consumed in meetings or in programs. The study found no relationship between collection size and level of support to a cooperative. Nor was there a relationship between size of the operating budget and level of support. There was a relationship between location and level of support in that libraries in Illinois contributed at a much higher level than did libraries in the other two states. New York was the second highest contributor.
