Title: THE EMERGENT INFORMATION MANAGER: A STRUCTURED OBSERVATION STUDY OF THE NATURE OF THE INFORMATION MANAGER'S WORK

Abstract: A structured observation methodology was used to study the work of five Information Managers (IM's), in four private companies and one government agency.

A quantitative analysis, based on time utilization, was performed to assess the IM's in terms of their work activities and work patterns. A qualitative analysis, based on a framework of organizational systems, was used to assess the purpose of their activities.

The quantitative analysis determined the activity patterns of the IM's resemble general managerial work patterns. The descriptive analysis determined Information Management work purposes can be ranked in order of importance as five roles, General Manager, Information Manager, Strategist, Information Handler and Professional. The major finding of the study is that Information Manager positions are changing from expert jobs, characterized by limited responsibilities and specialized work to managerial jobs, characterized by broader responsibilities, more contingent and less specialized work.
