Title: THE CULTURAL PERSPECTIVE IN THE STUDY OF ORGANIZATIONS AND ITS APPLICATION TO ACADEMIC LIBRARIES
Abstract: The research examined the validity of the cultural perspective as a conceptual tool for the study of the effectiveness of professional organizations such as academic libraries. This is accomplished through the development of a research framework to assist in the improved description, analysis, and assessment of the complex, multidimensional nature of professional organizations. The research framework identifies cultural characteristics, processes, and influences that create and maintain the culture which dictate organizational and individual responses to environmental stimuli and professional objectives.
The empirical portion of the study used the Kilmann-Saxton Culture-Gap Survey, the only known survey of culture in organizations, to assess the validity of the cultural perspective. The instrument is critiqued as to its usefulness and application. The academic librarian population of the 19 California State University campuses provided the sample survey population from which 66 survey responses were analyzed.
Findings verified the validity of the cultural perspective as a research tool for the study of professional organizations because the cultural approach addresses the intersubjective, multi-faceted nature of the professional organization in contemporary society. The empirical tool was found to be useful but overly simplistic when applied to the complexity of professional organizations such as academic libraries.
