The sample was composed of 275 output statistics collected from 76 public, academic, and special libraries. The results indicated that library-output statistics are positively autocorrelated time-series data. Two or more time series from the same library infrequently shared cyclical patterns, or trend in a common direction. It was concluded that library-output statistics are not redundant, nor do they cycle in a closely knit pattern. The sample library-output statistics correlated in a manner not predicted by previous theory. Several reference statistics collected from a library frequently correlated with each other but not with other types of library-output statistics. Reference and circulation statistics from the same library seldom correlated. Circulation and in-library-use counts from the same library, however, often correlated with each other. Prediction of in-library use from circulation was recommended. Reference statistics appear to be isolated from other measures of library output suggesting that all the output measures of a library are not relative measures of the same library-use phenomenon. The prediction of reference from other library-output measures was not recommended. The results indicated that the method of collection of a library-output statistic is less important than the content of the statistic. |
