Title: The history of published Arabic children's literature as reflected in the collections of three publishers in Egypt, 1912-1986

Abstract: In order to trace the historical development that occurred in published Arabic children's literature between 1912-1986, this dissertation examines the changing attitudes and trends as reflected in the themes published by al-Kilani, Dar al-Ma'aref and Dar al-Fata al-'Arabi publishing houses. A content analysis of selective major themes and values present in children's books published by the three named above publishers was performed. A list of eight thematic categories was developed as follows: (I) Concept Books, (II) Nursery Rhymes and Bedtime Stories, (III) Human and Social Issues, (IV) Conflict Issues, (V) Stories of Other Peoples and Cultures, (VI) Entertainment and Escape Books, (VII) General World History and Geography, and (VIII) Sciences. Material was analyzed at two levels: first, by a general analysis of each category within the collections under study; second, and more specifically, by an in-depth analysis of two of the thematic categories, namely the Human and Social Issues Category and the Conflict Issues category. Family, State and Heritage were analyzed under the former thematic category and politics, war and foreign domination under the latter.

Current published Arabic children's literature is moving toward realism even though results of the content analysis reveals an emphasis on moralizing, social morals and values. Many current issues of life in the Middle East are completely omitted from books written for children. Egypt's economic dilemma, poverty, pollution, and relations with other countries of the world are topics discussed in every house in Egypt. Yet none of these topics seems to appear in children's books. The Iraqi-Iranian war, the ongoing Lebanese civil war, and the inter Arab relations and conflicts are all topics that are avoided in the literature. The Palestinian-Israeli conflict is the exception and it is treated only by Dar al-Fata al-'Arabi. Publishing of religious themes is increasing and it is causing the reprinting of old published series by Dar al-Ma'aref in addition to issuing of newer series.

In order to obtain the children's books used in the content analysis and the data on the publishing houses, the author conducted a field trip to Cairo, Egypt during the summer of 1987. Interviews with people related to al-Kilani Press, Dar al-Ma'aref, and Dar al-Fata al-'Arabi were conducted.
