Title: Providers' perceptions of public library storytime: A naturalistic inquiry

Abstract: The purpose of this research was to inquire into the nature of the public library storytime experience from the provider's perspective. The main question that guided this research was: How do individuals who provide storytime in public libraries perceive what happens during storytime? The inquiry was based on the experiences of five individuals who provided storytime in public libraries in Central Texas from January to November, 1996. A preliminary questionnaire provided data for informant selection. Library size, community population, and provider's background and education were selection criteria. Data types included interviews, observations, documents, and artifacts.

A thorough analysis of the data produced five detailed, case reports which included a description of the provider's library, community, storytime audiences, education and work experience, and as well as a description of each provider's perception of what happens during storytime. Perception in this context means awareness and understanding.

Further interpretation--a cross-case analysis--compared and contrasted the data from the individual case reports to experts' storytime models. The data also were examined in a way that situates the research findings in a broader framework--the theory of emergent literacy from a Vygotskian perspective. Data indicated that storytime providers find pleasure in providing storytime and recognize that storytime is an important social experience for young children that facilitates learning.

Finally, a preschool storytime model for large groups, is conceptualized. Three main factors influenced this model: (1) The fact that no such model currently exists. (2) The data generated in this research. (3) My personal experience providing storytime for large groups.

This model could be utilized by public library storytime providers in order to maximize their services to children in child care, to fulfill the mission of the Prototype of Library Service to Young Children and Their Families, and to achieve National Education Goal One. Suggestions for future research are included.
