Title: ACHIEVEMENT MOTIVATION THEORY AS IT RELATES TO PROFESSIONAL PERSONNEL AT COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES
Abstract: The labor-intensive nature of library work, coupled with rising costs and static budgets, has spawned increasing interest in motivation among librarians. Past research has concentrated upon the organizational model and supervisory styles as factors motivating individuals. This study has looked as the personality of librarians, using the framework of Achievement Motive Theory, in an effort to further explore the motivations of academic library professionals. A major part of the research was the construction of scales to measure need for achievement and need for power.
Hypotheses were formulated based upon past research in Achievement Motive Theory and the author's experience as a librarian. An instrument requesting personal information and measuring need for achievement, power, and affiliation was sent to a sample of academic librarians. Useable responses were received from 80 percent (333).
Administrative personnel in libraries were found to be higher in need for achievement than non-administrators but not different in need for affiliation or power. Staff specialists as a group (computer specialists, personnel managers, etc. ) were higher in need for achievement and lower in need for affiliation, a finding which was interpreted as a source of possible difficulty as libraries continue to employ more diverse individuals. Evidence was presented which strongly suggested that women librarians are being discriminated against in terms of salary. Further research with librarians, in a smaller but more intensive study is suggested.
