Title: DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAMS AND STUDENT SUCCESS AT SEATTLE CENTRAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Abstract: "This study analyzed problems of students in developmental courses at one community college in Washington State during eight academic quarters. The study examined academic and demographic data of 487 developmental students and 1,190 non-developmental students.

The data used in this study were on computer tapes filed with the Washington Community College Computer Consortium (WCCCC). The data format did not reveal the identity of the subjects. It was necessary to reformat WCCCC data files into a logical and usable format.

The study revealed that developmental and non-developmental students were more similar than they were different. Economic status was a much more important variable than ethnicity. There were three patterns of students enrolled in developmental courses: (1) students with needs to develop math skills, (2) students with needs to developmental English skills, and (3) students who needed to develop both English and math skills.

The students were almost evenly divided by gender. The study revealed that Black developmental students tend to persist longer than White and other minority students.

There were no significant age-related findings. The goals of students in developmental courses were significantly higher than the goals of students in non-developmental courses.

Approximately 75 percent of the students were not equipped for a college-level English class, while approximately 57 percent could not succeed in a college-level math class.

Using progress from developmental classes through college-level classes as one measure of success, it was learned that 31 percent of the English and math students were successful, 31 percent of the English-only students were successful, and nine percent of the math-only students were successful."
