Title: FACTORS GOVERNING THE AMOUNT OF DUPLICATION IN CONTENT DERIVED KEYS (SEARCH KEYS, TRUNCATED)

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to describe the characteristics governing duplication in content derived keys with a view to applying them as logical or primary record keys for bibliographic files with relational database management systems on small computers in libraries. A literature review revealed that statistical information published about truncated search keys focused on the retrieval performance of a limited number of formulas rather than on the characteristics governing duplication.

The study consisted of a pilot phase in which small files of approximately one thousand author and title records were systematically tested with different formulas, and a test phase in which a large file of eighty thousand title records was tested to verify and extend the results of the work with the small files.

The results of the tests indicated that the rate of duplication for a given formula increased with file size; that, as the length of a key increased, the number of duplicates decreased; that component position, especially of the first component, had some effect in reducing duplication; and that increasing the number of components in the key reduced the amount of duplication.

Producing weighted values for each formula, which assigned an increasingly severe penalty for every succeeding degree of duplication, showed that there were considerable differences in the scale between straight duplication and weighted duplicates with formulas of one, two, three and four components. With formulas of five components there was exact correspondence between the two scales. Although none of the formulas tested resulted in no duplication, 4,1,1,1,1 was the most effective eight character formula whether judged by the total number of duplicates or by the weighting method.
