Title: An investigation of the relationship between academic role and the information-seeking behavior of adult education faculty members
Abstract: This study attempted to find out whether variations in the academic roles of teaching and research are associated with variations in the information-seeking behavior of adult education faculty members.
The conjecture made was that role is a source of major variation in information-seeking. This conjecture was formulated in the form of 21 research hypotheses, which tested the three proposed dimensions of information-seeking: information importance, information preference, and frequency of information use. The matched-pairs Wilcoxon signed-ranks test was employed to test the hypotheses as a directional one-tailed test, at the.05 level of significance. Data were collected through a mailed questionnaire, which was sent to a group of 126 professors of adult education.
Results showed that role accounts for a significant proportion of information-seeking. Of the 21 hypotheses tested, 15 hypotheses were supported by the data collected, and 6 hypotheses could not be supported because the relationships were not in the hypothesized direction. Results also showed that of the 15 significant findings, 4 information sources were scored higher in the teaching role and 11 information sources were scored higher in the research role.
