Title: Search patterns using online catalogs
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to identify what fields are used to decide how to proceed to the next screen and what factors affect the selection of the fields used on the online catalog system. To aid in identifying search patterns, the study focused on three factors: the user (both novice and experienced), the query (known-item and unknown-item), and the nature of the online catalog system (in this case the NOTIS and Dynix systems). Data collection was conducted in accordance with a "2 x 2 x 2" design and data was analyzed using Chi-Square and logistic regression statistics.
The study shows that the most frequently selected search option used to begin searches was the subject search, while the title search option ranked second. The initial search option chosen by the users differed statistically according to the type of online catalog system used and the type of query. However, the type of user did not affect the choices of the initial search options. On the citation list screen, the title field was the most frequently used to move to the citation screen. The title field selections were affected by the initial search options and by the nature of the particular online catalog system being used. On the citation screen, the title field was the most frequently used for confirming a retrieved citation. The field selections were significantly different from those represented by initial search options and only the type of query affected the selection.
The results of the study suggest that the author search option is best located on the top of the search option list and that the use of various search options should be reconsidered in order to increase search success.
Interesting search patterns influenced field selections on the citation screen during the study were found. The number of screens used, for example, affected users' field selections for the known-item query. When the number of screens increased, users tended to use fields which differed from the initial search options.
