Abstract: This dissertation explores cultural, environmental, and individual influences on group interactions in isolated settings. Facets of human experience in isolated environments are discussed, and remote National Park Service (NPS) areas are presented as analogues to other isolation experiences. Participant observation in one isolated National Park extends a survey of rangers in a variety of NPS sites in the western U.S. Survey data provide general background about ranger personality characteristics, cultural norms of the NPS, and ranger perceptions of isolation. Objective, ethnographic, and self-report data yield more detailed information on park activities during a variety of seasonal changes. The variety of methodologies integrates climatic, intrapersonal, and interpersonal variables with special attention to time-sensitive effects. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations are offered for future research on groups in isolation. |
