Title: EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENT RELATING TO THE PRODUCTIVITY AND PUBLICATION PATTERNS OF SOCIAL SCIENTISTS IN THE MIDDLE EAST

Abstract: The aim of this research was to: study the relationship between educational environment and the productivity and publication patterns of social scientists in the Middle East, verify if there is a difference in productivity and publication patterns between (1) social scientists who are educated in the Middle East and those who are educated in western countries, (2) social scientists who reside in the Middle East and those who reside in western countries, and if a difference occurs to ascertain why.

A sample of 179 Middle Eastern social scientists with doctoral degree and a verified record of publication was identified and divided into different groups based on place of education and residency. Publications were collected and the quantity, language, form, co-authorship, and references contained in them were analyzed.

The findings are first, place of education is related to productivity, language distribution, form of publications and recognition; second, residency was a stronger factor than place of education in relating to all the productivity and publication patterns with the exception of quantitative productivity; third, other factors such as organizational affiliation and political affiliation were anticipated to be related to the productivity and publication patterns and should be considered in future research.

The conclusion is that although such factors as high teaching load, low wage and scarcity of fund should be recognized and corrected, the main problem affecting the productivity and publication patterns of social scientists in the Middle East is the lack of professional communication and the unawareness of research activities taken place in neighboring countries and institutions. Only Middle Eastern social scientists who received their higher education and reside in western countries are aware of and maintain contact with others doing like research, maintain formal contact with their field through meetings and publishing, are aware of and have access to related formal and informal publications, and have at their disposal the resources with which to work and, within their institutional framework, the right to choose a problem. Middle Eastern social scientists who reside in the Middle East, regardless of their place of education, appear to have a diametrically opposite profile to that described above.
