Title: Academic library effectiveness: An organizational perspective

Abstract: Librarians have not agreed on a clear meaning for library effectiveness. Likewise, in the organizational sciences, there is no agreement on the meaning of organizational effectiveness. This research attempts to establish criteria for assessing academic library organizational effectiveness and to develop an instrument (questionnaire) to measure the construct. Effectiveness is defined as "successful organizational transactions" as perceived by a group of specified library decision makers. It is studied from an organizational perspective, rather than at program, personal, or supraorganizational levels. The unit of analysis is the academic library in colleges or universities not offering doctoral degrees. The sample includes 131 libraries in institutions from six middle Atlantic states and the District of Columbia.

The results show that library effectiveness may be a multidimensional construct. Thirteen major dimensions are identified. The research further demonstrates that these dimensions can be grouped into four broad domains of effectiveness encompassing most library activities. Finally, it is shown that libraries vary in their effectiveness across the domains. Five distinct clusters of libraries are identified, each showing a unique effectiveness profile.
