Title: An analysis of the development of collections in libraries of Jesuit institutions of higher education
Abstract: This study examines the development of collections at libraries in U.S. Jesuit institutions of higher education. It seeks to identify the factors characterizing Jesuit libraries and their development. Using library data available from the Higher Education General Information Surveys and additional information gathered from telephone interviews with librarians at Jesuit institutions, a profile of Jesuit library collections is developed, the "adequacy" of the collections is examined, and factors that influence collection development are identified. A case study of one Jesuit library is presented. A profile of the library collection data for Jesuit colleges and universities shows that significant growth occurred between 1960 and 1968 and that by 1975, virtually all the library collections could achieve at least a B rating for meeting ALA standards. The collections in Jesuit institutions tend to be stronger in humanities areas: literature, history, philosophy, and, of course, theology. The library collections most obviously reflect the Jesuit educational philosophy by emphasizing humanistic, ethical, and values-oriented study. A review of expenditure data reveals that Jesuit institutions tend to allocate a higher proportion of their general and educational expenditures to the library than do U.S. colleges and universities in general. However, the assignment of levels to the collections by librarians at the Jesuit institutions suggests that the development of some of the collections is not as extensive as might be expected.
