Title: TOWARDS AN ANALYSIS OF INSTRUCTIONAL TELEVISION PRESENTATIONAL FORMS: A CASE STUDY

Abstract: "What is instructional television? There are two established responses to this question within the field of instructional technology. First, instructional researchers and designers have characterized instructional television as videotape recordings that are designed to achieve a specified learning objective, employ an instructional methodology that can be replicated, and can be validated as a sub-set of an instructional system. Second, television producers characterize instructional television in terms of the formal elements that comprise the format type. This dichotomy between instructional television designers and producers demonstrates a theoretical division between the knowledge base of each position. Instructional design develops the role of pedagogical principles in mediated instruction while media theory develops the role of television production, distribution, and reception. This inquiry attempts to advance the perspective of television producers by developing an analysis technique, based on media theories of aesthetics and culture, to help inform television producers of the various formal elements possible in the instructional television format.

This inquiry is directed toward creating a common discourse between instructional television producers and educational researchers and designers through a three step procedure. First, an analysis technique comprised of formalist principles of film theory modified by semiological principles of television theory is formed. Second, this analysis technique is utilized to examine an instructional television program in a case study application on the Corporation for Public Broadcasting program The Brain: The Enlightened Machine (1984). Finally, presentational forms located by the analysis technique are contrasted with pedagogical principles of instructional design to identify possible commonalities between principles of media and principles of instruction. The significance of cataloging the utilization of instructional television presentational forms is that it provides television producers and educational researchers and designers with information regarding how the material object of the medium is formally articulated."
