Abstract: What is the nature of the process of innovation in computing? This research investigates this process within organizational settings. Computing innovations enhance or add to the existing supplies of computing resources within an organization. Nine computing innovations were examined in a comparative case study. Three cases of hardware-based innovations, three cases of software-based innovations, and three cases of organizational-based innovations were selected for systematic qualitative examination. These innovations took place in three different organizational settings; a science organization, a commercial insurance organization, and an academic computer science organization. Based on this comparative case study, subprocesses of innovation in computing were delineated according to a multi-level analytical framework. These subprocesses were then examined in light of two alternative models for understanding the process of innovation in computing. Finally, the examination of the data in terms of these two models lead to the development of an analytically robust model of the process of innovation in computing within and across organizations. |
