Title: Contextual perspectives of information for home care nurses: Towards a framework of nursing information behavior (NIB)

Abstract: There has not been any research on the information behavior model of home care nurses. This dissertation is a preliminary effort to develop a framework that will help describe the contextual nature of this nursing information behavior (NIB).

The community, or the professional environmental space (PES) of the home care nurse, is a wellspring of information. This is where both nurse and client interact and collaborate to maintain health and a sense of well-being as their mutual goal. There are factors, variables and situations in this professional environmental space (PES) that influence the nursing information behavior of home care nurses.

The aims of the study were achieved in two levels. Phase I involved conducting a survey designed to examine the nurses in terms of demographic features, most common information needs, preferred sources of information, usual barriers and roadblocks encountered, comfort and skill using information tools, and their agreement with components of home care competence. Phase II entailed the use of the case study approach, focusing on contextual descriptions of models, processes and steps used in NIB.

Understanding what constitutes the context of nursing information behavior will provide insight and understanding of how home care nurses identify, pursue, process, manage and use information. This will be useful when educating and training home care nurses and nursing students, providing supervision and guidance, formulating community health nursing practice standards and policy, and designing information technology, software and systems for their use. The outcome of the research, a proposed framework, is a systematic approach in understanding the unique features and needs of home care nurses as information users. The study should be replicated with other groups, including nurses from other clinical specializations, health and allied professionals, and similar field workers.
