Title: COMPUTER ENHANCED PRACTICE AND INTRODUCTORY ALGEBRA

Abstract: For the purpose of the study, writing, running, and modifying computer programs to practice mathematical skills and concepts was termed computer enhanced practice (CEP). The purpose of the research was to study the effects of CEP on the learning and retention of specific introductory algebra topics, and on the attitudes of students toward mathematics, homework, computers, and algebra. Student programming success characteristics were also examined.

An experiment comparing the effects of CEP and traditional practice (TP) was conducted during the fall semester of 1980. Ten suburban-Detroit teachers and students in twenty introductory algebra classes were involved in the experiment. Each teacher taught two algebra classes; one was randomly assigned to the CEP condition and the other to the TP condition. The entire sample was stratified into three general ability levels.

Students in the CEP classes wrote, ran, and modified BASIC computer programs to complete some practice exercises. Students in the TP classes completed all exercises with paper and pencil methods.

For each of the criterion variables--achievement, retention, and attitudes toward mathematics, homework, computers, and algebra--a triad of null hypotheses was tested using analysis of variance procedures. To analyze programming success characteristics, three null hypotheses stating the independence of programming success and ability, achievement, and retention were tested by constructing contingency tables and examining cell frequencies and chi-square statistics.

The following conclusions were made: Use of CEP as defined in the experiment led to less student achievement of particular introductory algebra topics. Use of CEP did not differentially affect student attitudes toward mathematics, homework, computers, or algebra. Achievement and retention were related to ability. Although retention was generally higher in the TP classes, the differences were not statistically significant. Programming success was related to achievement and retention, but independent of general ability.

The results of the research support others who have found that, by itself, writing, running, and modifying computer programs related to mathematical topics does not necessarily promote the learning of those topics. Because the definition of computer enhanced practice in the experiment was highly restricted, future research related to computer enhanced practice is needed.
