Title: The classical dramas of Shelley and Swinburne

Abstract: "The nineteenth-century British poets Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) and Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909) each wrote a pair of dramas based upon the model of classical Greek tragedy. These four works are Shelley's Prometheus Unbound (1820) and Hellas (1822) and Swinburne's Atalanta in Calydon (1865) and Erechtheus (1876). Shelley and Swinburne are two poets uniquely suited for joint consideration. They share many important similarities in their lives, beliefs, and poetry, and they were two of the most accomplished classicists among British poets of the nineteenth century who are still read today.

Greek tragedy is a hybrid form that combines the lyric and the dramatic. In my study, I examine how Shelley and Swinburne exploit the generic contrasts between the lyric and dramatic and how the poets manipulate the generic structures of Greek tragedy, often by interpolating forms and conventions from other genres, to transcend mere pastiche or imitation and create new forms of poetic expression. I also analyze their fidelity to their classical Greek models and how that fidelity resonates with the thematic concerns of the four plays. In addition, I locate in each poem what I call a poet figure, a character or group of characters who acts as an advocate for the creative, artistic, and prophetic impulse and serves as a mouthpiece for the aesthetic and political concerns of the poet. Through my analysis of these poet figures and the generic dynamics in each poem, I conclude that each of these four poems is in large measure a metapoem, a poem about poetry and poets."
