Title: TOWARD AN EXPLANATORY AND PREDICTIVE THEORETICAL MODEL OF ORGANIZATION FOR INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION

Abstract: "This exploratory study provided a comparative organizational analysis of nine different categories of colleges and universities, along with a taxonomy of educational institutions based on academic governance. The study investigated differences in academic organization between and within institutional categories. Also, the study analyzed the views held by presidents, deans, chairpersons, and faculty on academic governance.

The study's sample of colleges consisted of 99 institutions, including two-year colleges and institutes. From each of the nine institutional categories, 11 colleges and universities were selected to participate in the study. From each institution, then, four participants, which included presidents, deans, chairpersons, and faculty were selected. The data were collected via a survey instrument developed as part of the study. Data were analyzed through correlational procedures; descriptive statistics were utilized where appropriate.

Results of the study indicate that the 99 colleges and universities are organized around five different levels of organization: Political-bureaucratic, Political-collegial, Bureaucratic, Bureaucratic-Collegial, and Collegial. Institutions of higher education were cluster-analyzed and grouped according to their most dominant pattern of academic governance. The analysis on presidents across institutions revealed that the shared governance model was their preferred mode of academic organization. Similarly, deans across institutions perceived college governance as mostly collegial. Chairpersons, on the other hand, did not perceive any dominant pattern of governance, while faculty perceived governance as being mostly bureaucratic. Within institutional category, some variations in perceptions were noted. Mainly, administrators and faculty had different views about governance. Most administrators, with the exception of two-year colleges, perceived it as collegial, while most faculty perceived it as bureaucratic and political. Very few types of colleges and universities had consistent views about academic governance between administrators and faculty. Study results in connection to previous findings indicate that academic governance in general is not as collegial as used to appear in the past decade (1960-70). It appears that the governance of colleges and universities is shaped more by external factors.

Considerations for administrative practice were presented as were recommendations for future investigations."
