Title: Design information framework for integrating multiple aspects of design

Abstract: Involvement of multidisciplinary information is critical in a design process. This thesis developed a unified information platform that can integrate multiple aspects and viewpoints in design. Approaches of related work on the issue of multidisciplinary information in a development cycle fall into following categories: (1) a shared representation mechanism of design information, (2) a shared information structure for design, and (3) a shared process of design activities. This work identified the importance of interconnection between these categories, and developed a new information platform, a Design Information Framework (DIF) that provides a shared information structure to accommodate multiple aspects for design. Through several case studies with development of new methods and tools for aspect modeling, scenario generation, and prototyping specification, the following functions of the DIF that differentiate its development were evaluated: (1) providing common information platform as a shared language enabling design team members to share and discuss different viewpoints throughout entire process, (2) providing a base of developing new tools and methods for design, (3) accommodating multiple views and aspects, and (4) providing a mechanism of tracking down the previous project information or the evolved information history.
