Title: Ethnic studies collections and materials in California academic and research libraries : a descriptive study
Abstract: The intent of this study is to determine the existing practices of Ethnic studies library resources and collections as they relate to program needs in five California academic research libraries. The Ethnic Studies collections under review consist of Afro-American Studies, Asian-American studies, Mexican-American (Chicano) studies, and Native American studies. The five academic institutions are: Stanford University; the University of California, Berkeley; the University of California, Davis; the University of California, Los Angeles; and the University of Southern California. The objectives are twofold: 1) to isolate historical factors that led to the development of these Ethnic Studies collections; 2) to identify the patterns for coordinating and disseminating the Ethnic Studies resources available at the respective academic institutions. Interviews, on-site visitations, and distribution of questionnaires were conducted in order to gather the necessary data. This group of major academic and research institution library collections in California information concerning the organization, provided useful collection, maintenance and prominence of Ethnic Studies materials. It also demonstrates the extreme diversity in coordinating and disseminating information about the ethnic studies resources. As the need for the resources to expand continues, the problems associated with the centralization of the information needs to be addressed.
