Title: A comparison on the core competencies required of information professionals in automated libraries and information brokerage companies in Thailand

Abstract: The dramatic changes in information technologies and the relatively recent emergence of a job market for information professionals have influenced and affected the education and training programs for the Library and Information Science (LIS) graduates in Thailand. Library and information professionals are being called upon to accommodate the changes in society which may necessitate changes in information provisions as well as the acquisition of additional competencies on their part. This study was undertaken to determine the core competencies required of library and information professionals working in two settings that are automated libraries and information brokerage companies in Thailand and to compare the core competencies for both groups. The survey method was used for this study. Seventy-six competencies were identified. The population was divided into two groups: library administrators or librarians who direct leading automated libraries; and managers or supervisors of information brokerage companies or those who direct information brokerage companies in Thailand. A sample of 160 individuals was chosen to participate in the survey, of which 124 usable questionnaire were returned. Responses to questions were analyzed by SPSS for Windows 97, version 7.5. A combination of factor analysis, t-test, and descriptive statistics were used in this study. The analyses of the data were used to determine any differences between the two groups and to rank the order of competencies based upon the level of importance as perceived by the respondents. The data from this study reveal that the differences between Group 1 (Library) and Group 2 (Company) are apparent, 55 of the 76 competencies' means were significantly different at the 0.05 level. It is noteworthy that the information brokerage company group generally expressed a higher rating of the importance of competencies than did the automated library group. However, the findings also reveal that both groups share commonality in some of the required competencies, including the knowledge of information technologies, especially in database management system, and also information needs and uses. Problem-solving, project management, and teamworking skills are also highly required by both groups, as well as having a customer services orientation, being dynamic and change oriented, and providing quality and timely services. The factor analysis was computed on the two sets of data (Library Group and Company Group) using the principal component method to extract factors and varimax factor rotation method. The two factor solutions were examined and then compared, and tentative names were assigned to the factors. The analyses of the data yielded 76 survey items clustered into nineteen factors in Group I (Library) and eighteen factors in Group 2 (Company). The results from this study reveal that differences do exist between the competencies required of information professionals working in automated libraries and information professionals working in information brokerage companies in Thailand. The differences include the ranking of the importance of competency items, the levels of importance in competency items in both groups, and also the dimensions emerged from the factor analysis. The findings suggest that the present LIS curriculum should be considered separating into two different majors: one to prepare graduates to work in the library setting and another to prepare graduates to work in information brokerage companies. Curricula which apply two different sets of required competencies as core courses, one set for each major were proposed in this study.
