The process involves four phases: exploration, planning, development, and operation and evaluation. Patrick's original study examined academic libraries operating with manual systems. This research has traced the development of public and academic libraries in Massachusetts as they united in automated clusters. In 1981, Massachusetts libraries began forming automated resource sharing networks to increase access to information and to reduce the cost of computerized technology by sharing expenses. Six consortia have been examined to determine if the model established by Ruth Patrick for the development of manually-operated academic libraries would apply to the developing automated resource sharing networks in Massachusetts. The networks studied are Five Colleges, Incorporated; NOBLE; C!W MARS; Merrimack Valley Library Consortium; Minuteman Library Network; and Old Colony Library Network. A series of questions based on the Patrick model were used in structured interviews. The findings are presented as case studies. The results indicate that each network's developmental process included exploratory, planning, developmental, operational and evaluative phases. Ruth Patrick's model, therefore, applied to this sample. |
