The study was designed to test the motivational needs of corporate librarians against the above mentioned framework to identify the need strengths on the and hierarchy of needs and how different variables influence these needs. Data was collected by means of a two-page questionnaire which was sent to 27 corporate libraries in the state of Massachusetts. Responses from 27 formed the basis of the study. Within the scope of the study two hypotheses were tested and accepted. That corporate librarians are motivated by achievement, concern for people and self-actualization, and that not withstanding the age, sex, income and organizational level variables of the groups would not differ in any statistically significant way. Together, these hypotheses permit the statement that corporate librarians are motivated by a wide array of needs that was described in the management theories and also follow the same order. Librarians also demonstrated low management abilities. Additional research is required to refine the motivational construct presented and to extend it to include additional variables. |
