Title: Assessing the effectiveness of the collection at the Massachusetts School of Law Library : a conspectus-based model

Abstract: Research on collection assessment has been conducted extensively on university/college, research, public libraries and some special libraries such as medical libraries, but little work has been done relating to the assessment of academic law libraries. This research focuses on compiling base- line collection statistics for academic law libraries by evaluating the collections of a single law library: the Massachusetts School of Law (MSL) Library, a newly founded, non-American Bar Association accredited private law school. Until the present time, no studies have been conducted to assess the MSL collection. Librarians at MSL do not know whether their collections are effective in meeting the needs of users or the ABA accreditation requirements. The scope of this research is to make a detailed collection assessment on monographs, periodicals, microforms, and audiovisual materials held by the MSL Library. The Conspectus-based collection assessment methodologies used include shelf list analysis, list checking, curriculum mapping, interlibrary loan analysis, and applying standards. In this research, Chapter I gives background information on the research problem and the Massachusetts School of Law. In Chapter II collection evaluation techniques are identified. The main body of work consists of the collection assessment study (Chapter I I I) and analysis of the findings from the field research (Chapter IV). In Chapter V the conclusion and recommendations are outlined. The research evaluates a collection profile by drawing on the results obtained from several different assessment methodologies. It combines the physical collection analysis, with analysis gathered from the user perspective (faculty, student, curriculum) and accreditation standards to provide an overall assessment. The Conspectus framework is then used to provide the mechanism by which this data is merged and presented in a consistent and concise manner. MSL, as well as its Library, are relatively new (in their fifth year). The building of the library collection occurred in two major acquisitions, one from the purchase of a law school library, another from a law firm library. Research shows that a gap exists between the LC class range KFl through KF780, which may represent a gap due to the merging of the two libraries. The circumstance by which the collection was formed shows that collection building is not an overnight process, but requires a consistent, methodical acquisitions policy.
