Title: Beyond Race and Gender? The New Managing Diversity for Women: A Dual Approach

Abstract: "Diversity," as a keyword of our post-affirmative action era, is a crucial topic for Women's Studies research as we begin the twenty-first century. This dissertation looks beyond race and gender to investigate the most significant and promising manifestation of the new diversity: managing diversity . Managing diversity was only recently introduced to corporate America in the 1990s, but it has already been implemented by 70 percent of Fortune 500 corporations. The attraction of managing diversity is that it claims to offer a win-win for business and women in the workplace.

Many feminist critics have dismissed managing diversity for women because it puts into question the core concepts of feminism. This dissertation, however, argues that managing diversity for women passes the most important feminist theory tests: usefulness and explanatory power. Managing diversity for women explains in compelling fashion the continued existence of the glass ceiling that has barred women from advancement--and it offers a practical solution for advancing women to the top of organizations. But the implementation of diversity management in corporate America has not been without its challenges and failures.

Utilizing best and worst case studies, I suggest a crucial missing link in the translation from theory to practice in managing diversity for women : a guide for a dual management approach that explains how to align competing interests and develop common diversity objectives for the economic good of the corporation and the women who comprise its workforce. This dissertation provides the first guide for how to implement this dual approach--and a new and more compelling definition of managing diversity for women that broadens the responsibility for success beyond management.
