Title: Transnational Dreaming: (E)Raced Bodies and Engendered Migration in Dominicanidad

Abstract: This dissertation explores the stories that are told by migrants and migrant-effected communities in the Dominican Republic and its U.S. diaspora to determine how these stories impact decision-making and self-conception within Dominicanidad . The work is particularly concerned with the engendering of the migration process with a focus on women's experiences. I also deal critically with shifts in racial identity and the negotiation between migration experience and the needs and ideologies of Dominican non-migrants. Finally, the dissertation combines history, literature, and anthropology, in order to unpack how both the real and the imagined combine to (re)create Dominican identity across space.
