Title: "These will be strong": A history of the Washoe people

Abstract: Until the mid-nineteenth century the towering eastern Sierra and the sprawling Great Basin established protective boundaries for the Washoe people. Lake Tahoe, today bisected by the border between California and Nevada, provided the center of traditional Washoe lands. In this relatively isolated environment the Washoe made their homes for thousands of years. Beginning in the mid nineteenth century non-Native people poured into and through Washoe lands on their way to the California gold fields. Eager newcomers pushed Washoe families to the periphery of a growing American society. In the 1860s an agent of the federal government deemed Washoe extinction certain, but they survived.

This dissertation employs archival and ethnographic material to understand how they survived. On the fringes of burgeoning mining communities, towns, ranches and farms community members adapted--recreated themselves, but elements of traditional Washoe culture persisted and exist today among members of the Washoe nation. Through over one century of contact with outsiders the Washoe have been subject to egregious mischaracterizations grounded in ethnocentric and sometimes racist interpretations. Professional historians have overlooked this small, western community. The history that follows restores the Washoe to their rightful place as original inhabitants and shapers of the eastern Sierra, while acknowledging their determination to remain in their homelands.
