Title: St. Catherine Indian School, Santa Fe, 1887--2006: Catholic Indian education in New Mexico

Abstract: This dissertation provides a history of St. Catherine Indian School in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This work adds to both our understanding of Catholic Indian education as well as to our understanding of recent Indian education as the story goes forward to 2006 and discusses some of the legacies of St. Catherine School in terms of current Indian education. Typically historians tell the story of Indian education either as a story of victimization or as a story of cultural perseverance and adaptation despite tremendous odds. This dissertation recognizes both of these kinds of stories and in many ways tells these kinds of stories, but does so through the added lenses of the Catholic Church and the relative normalcy of the high school experience in the second half of the twentieth century for individuals who attend the school, despite a tide of tremendous changes in Native education and New Mexico history and politics.

This work draws upon archival research and oral interviews. The printed materials include archival materials, newspapers (including papers created by the students themselves), annual reports, government reports, yearbooks, and school videos and promotional materials. The oral evidence consists of a number of interviews with Native people and non-Native people who were related to the school as students, parents, or employees and in some cases all three. Combining both archival research and oral interviews yields a glimpse of a specific type of Indian school that existed for more than a century and a school that, through its graduates, continues to affect and influence Indian education in New Mexico today.
