Title: Willie, Waylon, Buck and Merle: Nashville outlaws and the American West

Abstract: Cowboys and outlaws had gained in popularity from the mid-1960s to the end of the 1970s. The images appealed to a new generation of people that felt a connection to the independence of the cowboy, or the rebelliousness of the outlaw, the romanticism of the Indian, and even the traditional outsider qualities of the Okie. Country music artists Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings billed themselves as westerners and thus outsiders. The four were either born in Texas or California, and they publicly celebrated their ancestry and western roots. They also purposefully promoted themselves as outsiders, or "outlaws" from the country music capital of Nashville, Tennessee. In doing so they helped spark a renaissance in outlaw imagery popular through the era, embodying changes taking place in American culture in general.

Western states such as California and Texas pioneered new music and attracted different types of fans. They also had connotations with independence, freedom and tradition in America, and contributed to national trends in culture and style. Americans feared change and losing independence. These romanticized ideals of cowboys and outlaws told them they could keep treasured values.

This work uses archival documents such as fan club newsletters, industry and independent magazines and newspapers, album photo art and press releases, and the artists' music to explore the way musicians used the Old West to promote their careers. Many younger fans became attracted to the western music because of the "outlaw" image portrayed, helping to spread western ideals of freedom and independence even further.
