The images appealed to a new generation of people that felt a connection to the independence of the cowboy, or the rebelliousness of the outlaw, the romanticism of the Indian, and even the traditional outsider qualities of the Okie. Country music artists Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings billed themselves as westerners and thus outsiders. The four were either born in Texas or California, and they publicly celebrated their ancestry and western roots. They also purposefully promoted themselves as outsiders, or "outlaws" from the country music capital of Nashville, Tennessee. In doing so they helped spark a renaissance in outlaw imagery popular through the era, embodying changes taking place in American culture in general. |
