Title: The Cherokee Nation from Indian Territory to Statehood and the Impact of Allotment: One Family's Story

Abstract: The United States completed its assimilation policy of allotment at the start of the twentieth century. Allotment devastated Cherokee people, including William Tecumseh and Sharada Byrel Price. American society in general accepted and supported the federal government's attempts to assimilate Cherokee people, due in part to the prevailing conception of the term "Indian" as it evolved over time.

This dissertation examines the impact of allotment on, and the economic and cultural changes experienced by, the Cherokee Nation in general and the Price family in particular. Allotment translated into land loss, leading to poverty and isolation. Cherokee people protected themselves through the revitalization of their traditional beliefs, and still others embraced the ideals of western civilization. Most Cherokees settled somewhere in between traditionalism and western civilization.

The Price family faced land loss and poverty. William and Sharada Price lived and worked on other people's land, much of the time on land still owned by members of their extended family. Adjusting to a capitalist economy of wage labor lead to many cultural shifts. Patriarchy introduced by western civilization supplanted the role of women in Cherokee society. In addition, the family moved away from Cherokee country to find work, separating them from the support offered by their extended family. The Price family, as well as the Cherokee people in general, found ways to adapt their culture to work within the confines of American society.
