Title: Missionaries and motherhood: Sixty-six years of public health work in South El Paso
Abstract: This study places the story of a Methodist settlement house, clinic, and maternity hospital in El Paso, Texas, within the context of the history of the US-Mexico borderlands, of women's organizations, and of developing public health. It focuses on the emergence of the clinic and maternity hospital as institutions responding to and, in turn, shaped by, intercultural interactions with their community.
In order to understand the impetus behind these public health efforts, this study explores the patterns of middle-class women's missionary activity that preceded these projects. While the efforts to convert non-Protestants are omnipresent in global history, home missionaries working within the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century also sought to promote Americanization. Thus, they imported their beliefs and standards of living and attempted to teach, or impose, both on their chosen communities in order to change ways of living, dressing, speaking, and interacting socially. Communities responded in a variety of ways and on their own terms.
El Paso was chosen as the site of home missionary work because of its border location and the moral risks associated with it. Missionaries, however, found the greatest risks residents faced to be the consequences of poverty. They, with the support of Methodist women nationwide, opened Houchen Settlement, Freeman Clinic, and Newark Maternity Hospital as community institutions that sought to enrich the lives of Segundo Barrio's residents. Providing accessible, quality public health care proved the most effective means of simultaneously combating poverty, serving the community and earning its trust.
