It tests the hypothesis, put forth by feminist economists, that the process of economic restructuring intensifies women's subordination. At a macro level, it argues that the work of social reproduction must be incorporated into understandings of a new regime of capital accumulation. Through an examination of changes in legislative and regulatory initiatives as well as changes in social programmes and spending, it finds that the state, in this case Ontario, is redefining its relationship with the market and family/household sectors. Case study data consisting of intensive longitudinal interviews with members of 41 households reveals that the gender regime that is emerging in Ontario is unstable, and is intensifying the demands placed in particular on women in households to manage an increasingly insecure labour market and often inaccessible or underfunded social services. The following account demonstrates that the experiences of individuals at the micro level of the family/household have profound effects on the success of social policy and economic initiatives at the state and market levels. |
