Abstract: This dissertation project analyzes methods of approach to non-commercial, personal, video production. The project contains two parts. Part one is a videotape entitled, Many Roads to Rome: Alternate Entries Into Computing. It explores through interview and observation the entry into computing of an artist, a musician, and a religious person. The purpose of the videotape is to explore the potential and limitations of VHS (half-inch video format) production for purposes of education and self-expression at the local level. The videotape demonstrates the creative potential of manipulation of color, camera movement, the use of various transitions (including fades, wipes, and cuts) as production elements. The second part of the project is an analysis of the relationship of technology and culture, aesthetics and economics in the context of the individual who wishes to create video materials for educational and informational purposes on a personal basis. This analysis comments upon the effect of broadcast television upon shaping the aesthetics of all video production and non-commercial video production in particular. It comments upon the nature of contemporary broadcast aesthetics. The question of technological tradeoffs is examined in light of the value of individual self-expression via a mass media medium. There are two appendices. The first is a selection of amateur video and super 8 advertisements that further the myth of the possibility of achieving commercial media results with non-commercial equipment. The second is a selection of stills that illustrate segments of commentary on the production. |
