Title: Trauma\'s narratives: Diasporic histories and ineffable truths

Abstract: This dissertation draws from psychoanalytic theories of trauma in order to analyze dilemmas of displacement, loss and diaspora with specific attention to gendered narratives of Canadian immigrant history. The dilemmas considered belong to these bodies of literature: discussions of postcoloniality that engage questions of diasporic identity from the vantage of Women\'s Studies; discussions on the relation among psychoanalysis, history and literature; and literary representations of the paradoxes of the diasporic subject. By bringing history and literature into tension, and by reading this tension through psychoanalytic claims, this dissertation asks the following questions: What challenge does trauma offer to understanding discourses of postcolonial representation of colonial history, displacement, and cultures of resistance? How are these problematics or themes configured in Canada through fiction? What is the status of narration in Postcolonial Studies and how is trauma inflected in narrative? How does literature re-embody the repressed status of a traumatic past and how does it provide the conditions for insight into the history of diasporic survival?
