This work is such an investigation. Utilizing the methodological and theoretical tools of feminist religious studies which include the interdisciplinary fields of feminist ritual theory and feminist theology, as well as an original taxonomy of Jewish feminist liturgy, this work explores and critiques the ritual, liturgical, and theological constructs found in Jewish Renewal. This analysis reveals that liberal Jewish women's voices and spiritual understandings are articulated in the practices of Renewal. It has also been found that, as in most developing religious groups whose emphasis is on experience rather than theory, Renewal's feminist theological understandings have yet to be thoroughly articulated. It has been demonstrated throughout this work that the practice of Judaism has been and will continue to be transformed through the liturgical, ritual, and theological contributions of Jewish women and their various feminist spiritual concerns. |
