Title: A FLIGHT INTO UTOPIA: THE PROSLAVERY ARGUMENT OF THE AMERICAN SOUTH IN SOCIAL-HERMENEUTICAL PERSPECTIVE

Abstract: "This study addresses, latu sensu, the problem of the formation of world views, in the general context of a sociology of knowledge. It uses Lucien Goldmann's genetic structuralism as the best methodological and theoretical orientation. In specific terms, it seeks to shed further light on the genesis and nature of the proslavery argument in the American South in the first half of the nineteenth century.

The main focus is on the presence of paradox in the proslavery discourse regarding the dual characterization of the African slave as both a permanently inferior being, and a being capable of transformation and assimilation into neo-European society. This dualistic classification is examined in reference to larger oppositions within the system, such as center vs. periphery and progress vs. tradition.

Several hypotheses are advanced. First of all, that the Southern system of slavery--and ultimately all New World slavery--was peripheral to the movement of world capitalism. Secondly, that the more prevalent and enduring definitional category for the African was that of a permanently inferior being, hence, ineligible for assimilation into the mainstream of sociocultural life. Thirdly, that this pattern of perception of the subordinate element was operative both during and after slavery. Finally, that the structures of consciousness which supported this particular conceptualization of the African were drawn from religious ideology."
