Throughout breast reduction surgery is situated as an operation that, if left unexamined, is always already about the production of (more) normative femininity. Therefore, this situation necessitates a more nuanced reading of gendered differences within the category of 'female'. The project interrogates feminist concerns with bodily alterations such as cosmetic surgery and seeks to reposition and complicate existing scholarship on the subject. The central argument calls for a reconsideration of the implications of leaving normalizing ideas unevaluated---such as the 'medical necessity' of elective surgeries and the division of plastic surgery into 'reconstructive' and 'cosmetic' procedures. The overarching argument is that gendered norms of embodiment fundamentally structure our understandings of such divisions and therefore the delivery of, and meanings attached to these experiences. |
