Title: Forging an indigenous future: The Nez Perces, 1893--1934

Abstract: The study of the Nez Perce reservation in Idaho focuses on the assimilation period of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Federal policies of allotment and assimilation transcend the period and initiated numerous changes on the reservation. Members of the tribe, however, frequently refused to acquiesce easily. Although government officials forced the cession of non-allotted land, those discussions with the Nez Perces introduced a period in which the tribe consistently asserted itself against federal policy and supervision. The reservation setting provides key context regarding health and economic issues. Within that environment, the opening of the reservation to non-Indian settlement instigated many of the changes that impacted the Nez Perce community, most immediately in terms of interpersonal relations and reservation infrastructure. The long-term results of non-Indian entry onto the reservation included the economic impact of leasing as well as a general trend of land alienation. Moreover, Nez Perces continually experimented with tribal government, influenced agency and policies, and consistently pursued tribal interests. Their clear involvement in reservation affairs attests to the vital role Nez Perces played in determining the tribe's future. Frequently incorporating older values and methods into their actions, the Nez Perces further demonstrated their determination to maintain tribal identify despite the considerable challenges they faced. By the time federal policy attempted to officially grant self-determination, the Nez Perce tribe confidently moved into a new era, already experienced in forging their own future.
