Abstract: 1920s prohibition greatly influenced vice and tourism on the U.S.-Mexico border. This influence, however, varied from one location to another. Comparing and contrasting three differing border communities reveals three distinct reactions to U.S. prohibition. Geographically dispersed, Tijuana/San Diego and Southern California sits near the Pacific Coast; Ciudad Juárez/El Paso rests in the middle; and Matamoros/Brownsville and the greater Lower Rio Grande Valley anchors the border on the Gulf Coast. These locations differ as much in politics, economy, and community relations as they do in geography, providing the factors of consideration for examining vice and tourism on the border in the era of U.S. prohibition. |
