Title: Synthesis of substituted 2,2\'-bipyridines and their metal complexes

Abstract: A number of angular bis(terpyridine) and its substituted ligands were designed and synthesized. Preliminary studies have been carried out to investigate the possibility of the formation of two and three dimensional nano structure by ruthenium and bis(terpyridine) complexation. A series of 2,2 \' -bipyridine with pendant carboxylates at 4,4 \' -position with various length of methylene bridge (n = 1,2,3,4,5) were synthesized, and their rhenium complexes were prepared and adsorbed to SnO 2 nano particle thin film to study ET. As expected, the exponentially decrease of ET rate shows a breakdown in short spacer system (n = 1 and 2). Another series of 2,2 \' -bipyridine with thiol functional group at 4,4 \' -position and their rhenium complexes were also prepared and subjected to the similar studied. An efficient protocol of synthesis of 4-substitued 2,2 \' -bipyridine ligands was developed. The obtained monosubstituted bipyridine was connected to rigid, conjugated polyphenylene spacer and a novel tripod triptycene anchoring group. The Diels-Alder reactions of substituted anthrances and benzyne and/or quinone were systematically investigated to synthesize the desired unsymmetrical tetrasubstituted triptycene. The target conjugated ligand was prepared by connecting three major components utilizing palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions.
