Title: "Before we reach the heavenly fields": Religion and society in Wilkes County, Georgia, 1783-1881

Abstract: This dissertation studies the influence of evangelical religion in the nineteenth century South by examining the intersections between society and religion. It does so within the confines of a limited geographical region, that of Wilkes County, Georgia. Historians have long recognized the importance of religion within southern culture and society, and more recently, studies of particular groups of southerners, especially slaves and women, have revealed the key role that religion often played in both individual lives and larger communities. This study of religion and society explores that role on a local level, over a time-span of close to a century, making possible a richness of detail not easily achieved in works with a broader focus.

Wilkes County lay at the northeastern end of Georgia's plantation region and offers the records of a thriving plantation society. Besides extensive church records, this study makes use of personal papers, census records, newspapers, and denominational records. Through these resources, the dissertation analyzes those moments in which religion and society were at odds with another as well as the times during which the two worked supportively. The study traces the intersections of religion and society from the end of the Revolutionary War until the time in the late 1870s when most blacks had left former biracial churches to form congregations of their own. While proceeding chronologically, the study seeks to highlight in particular the movements by which southern churches became more integrally a part of southern culture and society.
