Title: "A woman for a woman's job": Arizona women in politics, 1900--1950
Abstract: Women have played an important, but relatively unknown, role in Arizona politics. Few women appear in the state's published histories, and little is known of their actions prior to the modern woman's movement. This study examines the early roots of women's political participation in Arizona, beginning with the suffrage movement and continuing until 1950.
Women were active in Arizona politics on a number of fronts. They worked through the political parties, through women's organizations, and as candidates for office, experiencing varying degrees of success. Over the years, however, they did develop a woman's agenda of issues, focusing mainly on education, public health and social welfare, children, and women's work. Also, many women involved in politics had a large stake in Arizona, as working women--often widows with families to support--and as pioneers with strong ties to community. These women brought to their campaigns for office and to the legislation they sponsored a deep commitment to the growth and well-being of the state. They convinced many voters of their qualifications and were elected to public office in numbers higher than in most other states. These early female political pioneers established a niche for themselves in state politics, and their roles in governance continued to grow steadily over the years. This study surveys the women who worked in the suffrage movement and who ran for local, county, legislative, state, and federal offices in Arizona from 1914 to 1950.
