Mutually beneficial and long-lived, the relationship took place both on the reservation and in the town of Flagstaff and was influenced by events on the state, national and global level. In the early years, few Navajos traveled to town so most of the contact came from reservation traders and missionaries who had links to Flagstaff. The annual Flagstaff All Indian Pow Wow, first held in 1929, increased this contact by drawing hundreds of Navajos into town each year. The sponsorship of Native American artists by the Museum of Northern Arizona created another link between Flagstaff and the reservation. World War II and the construction of the Navajo Ordnance Depot in Bellemont, Arizona, eleven miles outside of the city, enticed many Navajos to settle in Flagstaff and Bellemont. The two decades following the war saw a dramatic increase in contact between Navajos and the city of Flagstaff. Navajos came to town seeking educational opportunities as well as employment. This dissertation investigates the nature of the Navajo community in Flagstaff, finding that it did not share the same cohesive character as did other Indian communities in urban areas. Many of Flagstaff s Navajo residents chose to maintain reservation ties rather than to create new ones in Flagstaff, except for the families that settled in the Indian Village at the Navajo Ordnance Depot and later moved to Flagstaff. |
