The research occurs in the context of the literature on immigration and migration, the family economy, and the Polish ethnic group in diaspora. The research involves detailed analyses of immigrant families over approximately 50 years of settlement in the New World, as well as information available on the families before they left Europe. In addition to the family level, detailed studies of both communities were undertaken. Major primary sources are the census, tax records, newspapers (both Polish and English), and oral interviews. Temporary and permanent migration in the U.S.A. is examined, as are connections with family members elsewhere in North America, in order to create a more complete picture of Polish immigrant families and communities as dynamic entities. The study concludes that these immigrants made creative, adaptive choices in response to the opportunities and challenges they faced. They exchanged short-term stability for longer-term economic advantage, while compensating by creating community structures that emphasized unity and harmony. Far from tearing apart community and family, migratory strategies helped to build new community structures and family networks that were a completely new creation of these emerging ethnic people. |
